Every sidewalk or driveway you pour in Denver's right of way is guaranteed for three years after the city inspector accepts it, and the $10,000 Cement Sidewalk Contractor bond stands behind that promise. It goes on the city's own form, and the premium costs far less than tying up $10,000.
Denver Revised Municipal Code 49-648 requires a $10,000 surety bond from anyone licensed to lay, build or rebuild sidewalks or driveways in the public right of way. Licensed general contractors and owner occupants of abutting residential property are exempt from the license, and DRMC 49-649 makes the contractor guarantee the work for three years after acceptance.

DRMC 49-646 requires a license to lay, construct or reconstruct a sidewalk or driveway in the public right of way, with two exceptions:
Everyone else posts the $10,000 bond.
Under DRMC 49-649 the contractor guarantees each sidewalk or driveway for three years after the sidewalk inspector accepts it. The guarantee covers bad or unsuitable material, moisture problems, poor workmanship, settling of fills or excavations, and damage to a curb caused by the work. It reaches the base and the wearing surface and can require full reconstruction. If the city mails a repair notice and the contractor does not start within 10 days, the city can have the work done and charge the contractor under DRMC 49-650 and 49-652, and can recommend license suspension or revocation.
The city's Cement Sidewalk Contractor license bond names the City and County of Denver as obligee in the sum of $10,000, written by a surety authorized to do business in Colorado. It guarantees compliance with every ordinance on sidewalks, driveways, curb cuts, curb and gutter and minor drainage structures in the right of way, payment of claims from the work, indemnity to the city, and repayment of the city's costs if the contractor fails to make repairs for the full guarantee period. The surety may cancel by certified mail notice, and the bond ends 30 days after the notice is received. DRMC 49-651 also requires a separate indemnity agreement before work starts.
Under DRMC 32-65 the annual license fee and application fee are set by the manager of transportation and infrastructure, and no application fee applies to a renewal. Applicants need five years of verifiable experience and no test is required. Insurance must name the City and County of Denver as additional insured: commercial general liability of $1,000,000 per occurrence and $2,000,000 aggregate, and business auto liability of $1,000,000 combined single limit.
The surety sets the premium from the $10,000 bond amount and the owner's credit. Confirm the current form and fees with Denver Contractor Licensing at 720.865.2770 before the bond is issued.
General contractors licensed under Division 2 of Article XVII of DRMC Chapter 49, and owners who occupy the abutting residential property and do the work themselves or under their own supervision.
Three years after the city's sidewalk inspector accepts it, under DRMC 49-649. Repairs can extend to full reconstruction of the base and wearing surface.
If repairs do not start within 10 days of a mailed notice, the city can have the work done and bill you, and can recommend suspension or revocation of your license. Unpaid costs can be claimed against the bond.
DRMC 32-65 leaves the annual license fee and the application fee to the manager of transportation and infrastructure. Renewals carry no application fee. Ask Denver Contractor Licensing for the current amounts.
By certified mail notice to the city. The bond ends 30 days after the notice is received, and the surety remains liable for acts before that date.
