If your last Aurora registration was bonded at $10,000, that number is out of date. Since January 1, 2023, the city requires a $25,000 performance bond with every contractor registration application. A surety bond covers that requirement for an annual premium, so the full $25,000 stays in your business instead of sitting with the city.
Contractors register with the City of Aurora, Ohio Building Department under Chapter 1327 of the Codified Ordinances, and Section 1327.04 makes a $25,000 performance bond part of every registration application filed on or after January 1, 2023. The application also carries a $100 fee, a certificate of insurance, a completed R.I.T.A. form and, for plumbing, electrical and HVAC contractors, a copy of State of Ohio certification.

Aurora's contractor registration rules are in Chapter 1327 of the city's Codified Ordinances. Section 1327.04 lists what goes into an application, and item (c) sets the bond. Applications filed before December 31, 2022 required a $10,000 performance bond. Effective January 1, 2023, a $25,000 performance bond is required for all applications. The change came through Ordinance 2022-087, passed May 23, 2022.
The practical effect is that a contractor who registered years ago under the old figure cannot carry that $10,000 bond into a new application. Every application now calls for $25,000, so check the amount on your current bond before you file.
Applications are made to the Aurora Building Department on the department's own forms. Section 1327.04 requires a completed city application, a $100 fee, the $25,000 performance bond, a certificate of insurance and a completed R.I.T.A. form. Mechanical contractors in plumbing, electrical and HVAC also submit a copy of their State of Ohio certification. The department can ask for other information as well.
The state certification for mechanical work comes from the Ohio Construction Industry Licensing Board, which licenses electrical, HVAC, plumbing, hydronics and refrigeration contractors. Holding that state license does not replace the city bond. Aurora asks for both, and the state certificate is simply one more item in the same application.
The performance bond names the City of Aurora as obligee and backs the contractor's compliance with the city's building regulations on work performed in Aurora. If a valid claim is paid, the surety looks to the contractor for repayment. Premium is a percentage of the $25,000 bond amount that the surety sets after reviewing the owner's personal credit and, for some applicants, business financials and time in the trade. Confirm the current bond form and filing steps with the Aurora Building Department before the bond is issued.
No. Section 1327.04 kept the $10,000 figure only for applications filed before December 31, 2022. Every application from January 1, 2023 forward requires a $25,000 performance bond.
The city charges a $100 fee with the application. You also supply a certificate of insurance and a completed R.I.T.A. form.
Yes. Aurora asks mechanical contractors for a copy of their State of Ohio certification in addition to the bond. The state license is one of the application items, not a substitute for the $25,000 bond.
