A Heavy Hauling Class B move permit in Detroit comes with a $1,500 Uniform Surety Bond requirement, and the city is specific about what goes on the bond. Get the occupation, the code chapter and the December 31 expiration right on the first try and the bond clears review, so your oversize load moves on the date you planned.
The City of Detroit requires a $1,500 Uniform Surety Bond from haulers who move oversize or overweight loads on city streets under a City Engineering load move permit. The bond names the occupation as Hauler of Extraordinary Loads, cites Chapter 46 of the 2019 Detroit City Code, and must expire on December 31. Heavy Hauling Class B permits cost $200 one way or $400 round trip, plus $20 per registered vehicle.

Detroit's Department of Public Works issues City Engineering Oversize and Overweight Load Move permits for loads that exceed normal size or weight limits on city streets. As part of that permit process, the city requires a $1,500 Uniform Surety Bond from the hauler's surety company. Detroit lists its fees under the heading Heavy Hauling Class B: $200 for a one way move, $400 for a round trip, and $20 per vehicle to register.
The DPW page tells the surety exactly how to fill in three lines on the city's Uniform Surety Bond:
Because every bond ends on December 31, a bond written in the middle of the year still has to be renewed at year end to keep permits flowing into January.
The $1,500 bond runs to the City of Detroit and guarantees that the hauler will follow Chapter 46 of the 2019 Detroit City Code and the terms of its load move permits. If an oversize move damages city streets or property and the hauler does not pay, the city can claim against the bond. The surety pays a valid claim up to $1,500 and the hauler repays the surety.
The completed bond and the surety's Power of Attorney are uploaded through the city's online bond submission form, selecting option 642. The City Law Department reviews Detroit bonds and asks for documents one to two weeks before the permit is needed. Its guide names the errors that most often get a bond returned: incorrect code references, incomplete bonds, a missing or different attorney in fact, and a missing Power of Attorney.
Confirm the current bond form and your permit class with the Detroit Department of Public Works City Engineering permit office before the surety signs, so the bond matches the permit you will be pulling.
The Department of Public Works says line 5 should read Hauler of Extraordinary Loads, line 6 should read Chapter 46, 2019 Detroit City Code, and line 8 should show a December 31 expiration. Incorrect code references are one of the most common reasons the City Law Department sends a bond back.

On December 31. The city asks for that expiration date on every Hauler of Extraordinary Loads bond, so plan to renew before year end if you expect to haul in January.

The surety prices the bond from the owner's personal credit, the company's time in business and the $1,500 bond amount. The premium covers the bond through its December 31 expiration and is not a deposit.
