In Mountain Brook, a sprinkler system contractor means the people who install and service lawn irrigation, and the city wants a $10,000 bond on file with the city clerk before that work starts. You pay a premium instead of tying up $10,000 in cash, and the bond stays in force year to year until the surety gives the clerk written notice.
Mountain Brook City Code Sec. 109-231 requires anyone in the business of installing, removing, maintaining or repairing sprinkler systems in the city to obtain the proper license and deposit a $10,000 bond with the city clerk. The ordinance defines sprinkler systems as watering systems for grass, shrubs or other vegetation, and the bond must be written by a corporate surety authorized to do business in Alabama.

People often assume this bond is for fire sprinklers. It is not. Section 109-231 of the Mountain Brook City Code defines sprinkler systems as any system or fixtures installed on, above or beneath the surface of the ground for watering grass, shrubs or other vegetation. If you install, remove, maintain or repair irrigation systems inside the city, this is your bond.
Before starting that work, the contractor must obtain the proper license and execute and deposit with the city clerk a good and sufficient bond in the sum of $10,000. The surety must be a corporate surety authorized to do business in the state. The city council sets the form and substance of the bond, and a copy of the form is kept in the city clerk's office. The clerk approves the bond and keeps custody of it.
The bond is conditioned on the contractor following all laws, ordinances, rules and regulations that apply to sprinkler system work. It must hold the city harmless from claims and liabilities arising from the acts or omissions of the contractor, its agents or employees, and from unfaithful or inadequate work. It also promises that all work will be done in a good and workmanlike manner.
The bond stays in full force until 30 days after the city clerk receives written notice of the surety's intent to cancel. The surety remains responsible for liability that accrued before cancellation takes effect.
Section 109-230, just before this one, sets a separate $10,000 bond for sewer and septic tank contractors. A company that does both kinds of work should ask the city clerk whether each license needs its own bond.
No. The ordinance defines sprinkler systems as systems installed on, above or beneath the ground for watering grass, shrubs or other vegetation. It covers lawn and yard irrigation work.
With the Mountain Brook city clerk. Sec. 109-231 says the bond is submitted to the city clerk for approval and kept in the clerk's custody. Confirm the current form and filing steps with the clerk before the bond is issued.
You pay an annual premium, not the full $10,000. The surety sets the premium after looking at the owner's credit and the company's history, so the quickest way to know your price is to apply for a quote.
The bond stays in force until 30 days after the city clerk receives the surety's written notice. Line up a replacement bond before that date so your license work is not interrupted.
