Dothan will not finish a general contractor's business license until a $10,000 surety bond is on file with the city. The city emails the bond form once you apply, and you pay a yearly premium instead of tying up $10,000 in cash. Many contractors are quoted and bonded the same day.
The City of Dothan requires a $10,000 surety bond from general contractors as a condition of the city business license. Dothan's license schedule applies the same $10,000 figure to residential and non-residential general construction, and the city's application also requires a current license from the Alabama Licensing Board for General Contractors. The City of Dothan is the obligee.

Dothan sets contractor bonds in its business license schedule, Section 18-22 of the city code, adopted by Ordinance 2007-393. General construction is listed in two classifications. Residential building and housing construction above $10,000 and non-residential or commercial building construction above $50,000 each carry a $10,000 surety bond and require state certification. The bond is not tiered by revenue or job size. It is a single $10,000 figure.
The city's online business license application puts it plainly: general contractors must provide a surety bond, and the city sends the bond form and filing instructions by email after you apply.
Dothan asks commercial prime general contractors for a license from the Alabama Licensing Board for General Contractors. Under Alabama Code 34-8-1, state licensing applies to construction where the cost of the undertaking is $100,000 or more. Dothan's commercial permit instructions go further and say any contractor or subcontractor on a job of $50,000 or more must hold a state license. The city bond does not replace the state license, and the state license does not waive the city bond.
Dothan licenses subcontractors who carry no state certification, but caps their work at $1 to $49,999 on commercial jobs and $1 to $9,999 on residential jobs. A firm that bids above those limits needs the general contractor license and this bond.
The bond backs your promise to the City of Dothan that you will follow the city's licensing and construction rules. If a valid claim is paid, the surety looks to you for repayment. It is a guarantee of your conduct, not insurance for your business.
Confirm the current bond form and filing steps with the Dothan Business License office in Room 315 of the Dothan Civic Center before the bond is issued.
No. Dothan's license schedule sets $10,000 for residential building construction above $10,000 and for non-residential construction above $50,000. The amount does not change with company size or revenue.
Yes. The Dothan application asks for the state license and, separately, a surety bond. One does not stand in for the other.
Dothan has a separate subcontractor license limited to commercial jobs of $1 to $49,999 and residential jobs of $1 to $9,999. That license requires its own surety bond. Work above those limits calls for the general contractor license.
You pay an annual premium, not the full $10,000. The surety sets the premium after reviewing the owner's personal credit and the business's history, so two contractors applying for the same bond can be quoted different rates. Applying online gets you an actual quote rather than a guess.
Dothan business licenses expire on December 31 each year. The city accepts renewals through the end of January without penalty. After January 31 a 15% penalty applies, and it rises to 30% on March 1. Keep the bond active through every license year and ask the city whether it wants a continuous bond or a new one with each renewal.
