Brief Summary
Before Dothan will license a business to install gas piping or gas appliances, it wants two things on file: a master gas fitter license and a $5,000 surety bond. The bond is the easy part. Pay a small annual premium and send the executed form back to the city.
The City of Dothan requires gas fitters to provide a surety bond with their city business license application, and to hold a master gas fitter license issued by the Alabama Plumbers and Gas Fitters Examining Board. This $5,000 bond covers gas system, piping and appliance installation work, runs to the City of Dothan, and is filed with the Business Services office.

Detailed Information About the Alabama Gas System, Piping or Appliance Installation ($5,000) Bond:
Who has to post this bond
Any business installing gas systems, gas piping or gas appliances inside Dothan city limits needs a city business license. The city application states that gas fitters must provide a surety bond and must hold a master gas fitter license with the Alabama Plumbers and Gas Fitters Examining Board. Once you apply, the city emails you the bond form and instructions.
The license that has to come first
The state board requires every company doing gas fitting work to register with the board before bidding or starting a job, and to name a principal master who holds a master gas fitter or master plumber certification and is actively involved in the business. A journeyman card alone will not carry the city application.
Term and renewal
Dothan business licenses expire December 31 and are due for renewal by January 31. A 15% penalty applies in February, and from March 1 the penalty is 30% plus interest. Keep the bond active for as long as you hold the license.
What the bond costs
You pay an annual premium rather than the $5,000 face amount. The surety sets it after reviewing the owner's credit and business history. Confirm the current bond form and filing steps with the City of Dothan Business Services office before the bond is issued.
