A state contractor license does not get you out of this bond in Cleveland. Whether you take a city electrical license or work here on a Mississippi State Board of Contractors license through reciprocity, the city wants a $5,000 bond issued to the City of Cleveland, Mississippi on file before you start. We write it with the expiration date the city requires, so it goes straight into your packet at Community Development.
Cleveland, Mississippi requires a $5,000 bond issued to the City of Cleveland from anyone applying for a city electrical contractor license under Sec. 18-50 of the Code of Ordinances, and from state licensed contractors registering under the reciprocity rules in Sec. 18-51. The bond must show a valid expiration date. Licenses cost $75, run for the calendar year and must be renewed on or before December 31.
We can help with all Mississippi bonds!
Sec. 18-49(a) of the Cleveland Code of Ordinances gives electrical contractors two routes when a permit is required. You can obtain a City of Cleveland license under Sec. 18-50, or you can submit proof of a valid Mississippi State Board of Contractors license in that field under Sec. 18-51. Both routes require the same $5,000 bond issued to the City of Cleveland, Mississippi, along with a certificate of liability insurance.
Sec. 18-49(b) exempts a homeowner doing electrical work on the single family residence they live in or are building to live in, provided they complete the owner and builder certification and do not hire unlicensed workers. Everyone else doing permitted electrical work needs a license or a reciprocity registration, and the bond that goes with it.
Applications are filed in person with the Department of Community Development. Sec. 18-50 lists a copy of a valid photo ID, a certificate of liability insurance for $100,000/$300,000 with products completed coverage showing the policy number and expiration date, the $5,000 bond showing a valid expiration date, workers compensation documentation for master or residential applicants with 5 or more employees, apprentice certification forms with W-4 or W-2 copies, and three letters of recommendation. Applicants also need written proof of passing an examination from the ICC, the Mississippi State Board of Contractors, or another Mississippi municipality or county. The city's electrical license classes are master electrical, residential electrical and journeyman electrical.
A new license is $75 and is valid for the calendar year, or part of it, in which it is issued. Renewal is $25 if completed on or before December 31. Renewals through January 10 carry an additional $250 late fee, and a license not renewed by January 31 is revoked. A reciprocity registration is $75 and is valid only for the calendar year in which it is issued. Because the bond must show an expiration date, keep it renewed in step with the license.
The bond backs the contractor's compliance with the city's licensing article and technical codes. If the city or a property owner suffers a loss because the contractor fails to meet those obligations, a claim can be made against the bond, and the surety will look to the contractor for repayment. Confirm the current bond form and filing steps with the Department of Community Development before the bond is issued.
