The $3,000 Baldwin County bond is a local filing that sits on top of your state septic certification, not in place of it. The premium is a small fraction of the bond amount, issuance is quick, and the executed bond goes to the county so you can start pulling permits for installs and repairs.
Baldwin County, Georgia requires a $3,000 surety bond from contractors who install or repair septic tanks or grease traps in the county. The bond is a local requirement. It does not replace the Georgia Department of Public Health certification that every septic tank contractor working in the state must hold under Rule 511-3-1-.16, and that certification does not replace the bond.
We can help with all Georgia bonds!
The most common mistake is assuming the state certification covers everything. It does not. Georgia regulates on-site sewage work through the Department of Public Health. Rule 511-3-1-.16 requires septic tank contractors, sewage pumpers, maintenance personnel and inspectors to be certified by the Department, with certification renewed every two years and renewal tied to continuing education. Baldwin County then adds its own $3,000 bond for anyone installing or repairing septic tanks or grease traps inside the county.
You need both. A current DPH certification does not waive the county bond, and posting the county bond does not let an uncertified installer work.
DPH requires installers to be at least 18, employed by a certified company, and to score at least 70 on the residential exam. Exams are scheduled through the County Environmental Health Office and cost $50 each. Commercial systems, subsurface drip systems and mounds require additional exams. New companies pay a company certification fee, listed by DPH at $400 for installing for 2026. Out of state certifications do not transfer.
The bond guarantees that the contractor will perform septic tank and grease trap work in Baldwin County in compliance with the applicable state rules and county requirements. If the county or a property owner suffers a loss from work that breaks those rules, a claim can be made against the bond up to $3,000, and the contractor must repay the surety.
Confirm the current bond form, the exact obligee wording and where to file with the Baldwin County Environmental Health Office before the bond is issued.
Yes. DPH certification is a statewide credential. The $3,000 bond is a separate Baldwin County requirement for installing or repairing septic tanks and grease traps in the county.
Yes. This Baldwin County bond is written for contractors who install or repair septic tanks or grease traps.
Rule 511-3-1-.16 requires renewal every two years, with renewal conditioned on continuing education. DPH allows renewal without retesting if the certification lapsed less than two years ago.
The surety prices the bond from the bond amount and the owner's credit and history. At $3,000 the premium is a small, one time annual cost.
