Trinidad will not issue a first contractor license, or reinstate a suspended or revoked one, until a license and permit bond of at least $5,000 is in place. A surety bond meets that minimum for a single annual premium, so a new contractor can get licensed and start pulling permits without tying up cash.
Under Section 5-12 of the Trinidad Municipal Code, a license and permit bond of at least $5,000 is required for every new City of Trinidad contractor license and for any revoked or suspended licensee seeking reinstatement. The bond sits alongside the City's insurance requirements and the A, B, C or D license class the contractor holds. The City of Trinidad is the obligee.

Trinidad licenses contractors under Chapter 5, Article 2 of its Municipal Code. Section 5-12 says a license and permit bond shall be procured for a minimum of $5,000 for all new contractor licenses and any revoked or suspended licensees seeking reinstatement. If you are licensing with the City for the first time, or coming back after a suspension or revocation, plan on the bond. Ask the Chief Building Official whether you must keep it in force when you renew.
Subcontractors must be licensed with the City even when they work under a licensed contractor. A resident homeowner working on their own occupied home, or a structure accessory to it, does not need a contractor license if they sign the Chief Building Official's form assuming a contractor's duties.
Licenses run for a calendar year. Contractor A covers all buildings, including three stories and above, and costs $150. Contractor B covers multi-unit, office and commercial buildings under three stories for $125. Contractor C covers detached single-family homes for $100. Contractor D is a single trade license, such as roofing, siding, excavation or concrete work outside the City right-of-way, at $75 per trade. New applicants also pay a $50 processing fee. Classes A, B and C need proof of ICC testing, as do mechanical and roofing contractors under Class D.
The City must be named as certificate holder. Minimum general liability is $1,000,000 each occurrence and $2,000,000 general aggregate, plus workers' compensation as state law requires. If a policy is cancelled, the license is suspended until new proof is filed.
Section 5-12 of the Municipal Code requires it for every new contractor license and for any revoked or suspended licensee seeking reinstatement. The figure is a minimum.
No, if you live in the home. A resident homeowner can work on their occupied residence or an accessory structure after signing the Chief Building Official's form accepting a contractor's duties.
Yes. Section 5-13 requires subcontractors to be licensed with the City even when supervised by a licensed contractor.
