Your county clerk will not register you as a California process server without a $2,000 bond in hand, and your registration ends the day the bond does. Buy a bond that covers the full two year term and you file once.
California requires anyone who makes more than ten services of process in a calendar year for pay, and any corporation or partnership that earns compensation from serving process, to register with the County Clerk where they live or have their principal place of business. Registration requires a $2,000 process server bond, or a $2,000 cash deposit in its place, under Business and Professions Code sections 22350 to 22360.

California defines a process server as any person who makes more than ten services of process within the state during one calendar year for specific compensation, or any corporation or partnership that derives or expects to derive compensation from serving process in California. If you serve ten or fewer papers a year, the registration and bond rules do not reach you. Past that number, you register with the County Clerk of the county where you reside or keep your principal place of business.
The bond is $2,000, names the registrant as principal, and runs in favor of the county and the State of California. County clerks ask that it cover the two year registration term and show that term on its face. A $2,000 cash deposit can be filed instead of a bond. The bond is also recorded with the clerk, which carries its own recording fee.
A certificate of registration is effective for two years or until the date the bond expires, whichever comes first. A one year bond on a two year registration cuts the registration short. Renewal can be filed up to 60 days before expiration, and the same registration number carries over if you renew in the same county without a lapse of three or more years.
You appear at the County Clerk's office with valid photo ID, the completed application, the original bond, a completed Live Scan fingerprint request, and the county's registration, bond filing and recording fees. Fees differ by county, so check your clerk's fee schedule. Applicants must be at least 18, cannot have a felony conviction, and cannot serve papers in a case where they are a party.
Yes. Registration lasts two years or until the bond expires, whichever happens first. Get a bond term that matches the full two years.
Yes. County clerks accept a $2,000 cash deposit in lieu of the bond. The bond keeps that $2,000 free for the cost of a premium.
With the County Clerk in the county where you live or have your principal place of business, in person, at the same time you file your registration. The clerk also records the bond for an added fee.
You pay a premium to the surety for the bond term. It is priced from the $2,000 bond amount and the applicant's credit, and you see the quote before you buy.
