Opelika will not issue an electrical contractor business license without a $5,000 surety bond on file. The bond goes in with your license application and a copy of your master card. You pay a yearly premium instead of handing the city $5,000 in cash.
The City of Opelika requires every electrical contractor to post a $5,000 electrical bond when applying for a city business license. The requirement appears in the business license schedules at Sec. 14-327 of the Opelika Code of Ordinances and on the city's Business License Application page. The bond runs to the City of Opelika and the application is handled by the Revenue Department.

Sec. 14-327 of the Opelika Code of Ordinances says all electrical and plumbing contractors must send a copy of their master cards with the license application, along with a $5,000 electrical bond for electrical contractors. Contractors whose trade requires state certification must also show proof of current certification before the license is approved. The city's Business License Application page repeats the $5,000 bond figure and notes that contractor certification numbers come from the state board that regulates your trade.
The electrical article in Chapter 5 of the code sets out the conditions an electrical contractor's bond carries. The contractor agrees to perform all work faithfully and follow the city's ordinances, rules and regulations on electrical work, to pay all required fees, to hold the city harmless from loss, damage or injury caused by the work, and to restore any street, alley, sidewalk or other property disturbed by the work to its prior condition and keep it in good repair for one year. If the contractor fails on any of those points, the city can claim against the bond and the contractor repays the surety.
Applications go to the City of Opelika Revenue Department by mail, with payment by check or money order. The city asks applicants to call the Revenue Department for license costs. Confirm the current bond form with the Revenue Department before the bond is issued.
Yes. Opelika asks for proof of state certification and the $5,000 bond. State certification is a prerequisite for the city license, not a substitute for the bond.
Failure to follow city electrical ordinances, unpaid fees, loss or damage the city suffers from the work, and failure to restore streets, sidewalks or other property disturbed by the work.

The surety prices the bond from the $5,000 amount and a review of the owner, mainly personal credit. You see the actual quote when you apply.
