Homewood will not issue a peddler or itinerant dealer license until this bond is posted, and a small seller may owe less than the full $5,000. A surety bond satisfies the city for a premium, so you can get licensed without handing the city a cash deposit.
Homewood requires every peddler and itinerant dealer to post a surety bond, acceptable to the City Clerk and payable to the City of Homewood, before a license is issued. Under Section 6-23 of the city code the bond is $5,000 or not less than 10% of estimated sales, whichever is less. The license also waits on the police chief's approval of a sworn application.

Section 6-23 of the Homewood code sets the bond at $5,000 or no less than 10% of estimated sales, whichever is less. A seller expecting $20,000 in Homewood sales, for example, would look at a $2,000 minimum, while anyone projecting $50,000 or more is at the full $5,000 cap. The City Clerk has to find the bond acceptable, so agree on the figure with the clerk before you buy it.
The code covers sellers who solicit orders or sell any type of merchandise in the city, including going door to door or from store to store. Homewood classifies this activity as a non-store retailer category that also covers solicitors and canvassers. Peddlers and itinerant dealers must have written permission from the owner or operator of a business to sell from its private parking lot or from the public right of way in front of it.
No license is issued until the police chief approves your sworn application and that approval reaches the City Clerk. The bond is required before the license is issued. Food trucks and other mobile units are handled under a separate Mobile Vendor Application on the city's forms page.
The bond protects the city and the people you sell to if you fail to follow Homewood's licensing ordinances. A valid claim is paid by the surety up to the bond amount, and you repay the surety. Confirm the current bond form and filing steps with the City Clerk's office before the bond is issued.
No. Section 6-23 sets the bond at $5,000 or not less than 10% of estimated sales, whichever is less. Smaller sellers can qualify for a lower figure if the City Clerk agrees with the estimate.
Only with written permission from the owner or operator of that business. The same applies to the public right of way in front of the business.
Homewood also needs the police chief's approval of your sworn application. The clerk cannot issue the license until that approval is received.
The surety prices the bond from the bond amount and your credit and business history. Request a quote rather than relying on a published range.
