This $10,000 bond is about more than plumbing. Birmingham's form also covers the trenches you dig and the streets you open, and it holds you to restore that pavement and keep it safe for a full year. Know what you are signing and the bond is a simple, routine filing with the city.
The City of Birmingham requires a $10,000 Plumber's and Gas Fitter's Bond from anyone in the business of plumbing, gas fitting, steam fitting, drain laying, excavating or blasting in the city. The City of Birmingham is the obligee, the bond is written on the city's own form and approved by the Director of Finance, and it stays in force until the surety cancels it in writing.

Birmingham's Plumber's and Gas Fitter's Bond form applies to a principal engaged in the business of plumbing, gas fitting, steam fitting, drain laying, excavating and/or blasting in the City of Birmingham. The bond is a flat $10,000 and names the City of Birmingham, a municipal corporation, as obligee. Many contractors assume it only covers work inside a building. It does not.
Under the city form, the contractor agrees to:
Any person, firm or corporation injured in person or property by a violation can sue on the bond.
The bond is approved by the Director of Finance. It has no fixed expiration on its face and remains in effect until the surety gives written notice. Liability ends 15 days after the Director of Finance receives that notice, though anything that arose before then is still covered. Birmingham business licenses expire every December 31, so keep the bond active for as long as you work in the city. Confirm current filing steps with the Department of Planning, Engineering and Permits before the bond is issued.
Plumbers and gas fitters in Alabama are certified by the State of Alabama Plumbers and Gas Fitters Examining Board. Holding that state certificate does not take the place of the city bond.
Yes. The city form covers anyone engaged in plumbing, gas fitting, steam fitting, drain laying, excavating or blasting in Birmingham.
You must restore the excavated portion to its former condition at your own cost, then keep it in safe condition for one year from the date of the excavation. Failing to do so can lead to a claim on the bond.
No. State certification through the Alabama Plumbers and Gas Fitters Examining Board is a separate requirement. Birmingham still requires its own $10,000 bond.
It stays in force until the surety cancels it in writing. Cancellation takes effect 15 days after the Director of Finance receives the notice.
The surety prices the bond from the owner's credit and business history. You pay a premium instead of posting $10,000 with the city.
